Welcome

Welcome to the Center for Computational Discovery. The centre is an new scientific community working at the interface of computational, physical, data and life sciences. The vision for the centre is to build a vibrant and highly interdisciplinary research community working in partnership across the University and with external partners. Our central focus is the development and application of new tools and techniques for computationally-led discovery. By combining advances in high-resolution experimental techniques, AI and Machine Learning with emerging computing platforms such as Quantum Computing, we think the time is right to make major contribtion to many fields.

One of the unique features of the centre is the close research partnership with IBM Research. The vision for the centre has been co-developed with IBM scientists and builds on common long term reserach interests. IBM scientists co-develop projects and work closely with Oxford academics across all fields, co-supervising graduates as well as providing access to many proprietary and unique computaional resources. This close partnership enhances the type and scale of the research questions and problems we are able to tackle.

Another key aim for the centre is to help train a new generation of scientists trained in multidisciplinary research and exposure to industrial research. To this end we have established a new DPhil in Computational Discovery.   The first students started in 2018 and 2019 and this has since grown into a larger intake of five students that started in October 2020.   We expect to grow this to a cohort of 20-25 students in the years to come. Studentships are funded by UKRI, IBM and the University of Oxford.
